Cruising Map Features

 

The front of each of our cruising maps has a Chart Finder, a Locator Map, Inset Maps, and the unique Proven Cruising Routes© taken by Don and Réanne Douglass aboard their research vessel, Baidarka. Each map is GPS compatible.

The back of each map has large-scale, detailed diagrams of harbors, coves, marinas—all the places to tie up and anchor. Included are an Alphabetical Index of Places, and a listing of Route Waypoints. (See sample diagram on the left.)

Broughton Archipelago

The Broughton Archipelago, with its hundreds of islands and narrow channels, lies between the northeast corner of Vancouver Island and the mainland coast where Knight Inlet and Klinklini River meet Queen Charlotte Strait. One of the Inside Passage's most spectacular cruising areas, the Broughton Archipelago has generally well-protected waters, remote inlets with pristine coves and quiet anchor sites, and comfrotable, friendly marinas. For many, the region has become a major destination for sportfishing, kayak exploring, and simply relaxing. It is known for its Orca-watching and it First nations' cultural museums and small, historic settlements.

Desolation Sound
and Johnstone Strait

 

Desolation Sound, the beautiful and popular cruising groundnorth and east of Malaspina Peninsula, was set aside in 1973 as the largest marine park in southern British Columbia. To today's visitors, the name Desolation Sound evokes a place of calm, clear water, lush scenery, and wildlife such as beaver and bald eagles. During summer, some of the warmest waters along the coast can be found wihtin th e sound—ideal for swimming, snorkeling, diving, coneing, and kayaking. Oysters and clams can be found in some sheltered bays and lagoons, and sportfishing is good. On the eastern horizon, the snowcapped peaks of the Coast Mountains provide stunning photo opportunities. Desolation Sound is a marvelous place to explore.

Prince William Sound
Eastern Section

 

Prince William is undoubtedly the jewel of Alaskan cruising waters—the destination many boaters deam of. Its 2,500 square miles of well-protected waters hold the greatest concentration of tidewater glaciers in North America. Myriad inlets, islands and islets conceal enough bays and coves for a lifetime of unparalleled exploring. Montague, Hinchinbrook and Hawkins Islands form a nearly perfect 80-mile-long breakwater" unbreached by Gulf of Alaska swells. Within the sound, wind chop seldo exceeds 3 to 4 feet during summer and, with limitless daylight hours near summer solstice, cruising becomes an almost 24-hour possibility.

Prince William Sound
Western Section

 

The western portion of Prince William Sound is an area of superlatives. This map completes the 3 part series on the Gulf of Alaska. It documents the entire coast of Kenai Peninsula from Seward to Homer, Alaska. There is an inset which includes Kodiak, Afognak, Shuyak and the Barren Islands. Baja California

 

It just got easier to visit the world-class cruising ground of Baja California. The enclosed new cruising map features the Off-Shore Express Route© from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas and the Inshore Proven Cruising Route© from San Diego to San Felipe. Enjoy the white sand beaches, remote coves, sport-fishing and warm-winter sunbathing available in this wilderness setting. Many chose this map for its key reference material to participate in the annual BajaHa-Ha cruising rally in October 2006.

This double-sided color map features expert local knowledge and waypoints which have been converted to WGS84 specifications. Each side contains detailed coastlines, along with major anchorage-waypoints. A waypoint list with latitude and longitude and a place name index are included.
