Inside Passage and Gulf of Alaska Articles
Many of our readers and
boating acquaintances have wondered why Réanne’s
series of articles on the Inside Passage and Gulf of Alaska
are no longer being published by a certain northwest nautical
magazine (which shall remain unnamed), and we think it’s
time to explain.
In 2004, the Douglasses
published the Inside Passage
Annual—a newsprint brochure with articles, updates,
and news from fellow cruising boaters—and were accused
of being in competition with the much larger, long-established
magazine. The magazine refused to meet with the Douglasses
to come to a satisfactory resolution, and their names
mysteriously disappeared from all mention.
In view of the fact that
the magazine is heavily supported by the marine industry,
and especially yacht brokers, the charge was ridiculous.
A guppy in competition with a whale? The charge also smacks
of restraint of trade.
We’d like to hear
what our readers have to say about this situation.
