What About Those Bull Rails Instead of Cleats Along the Inside Passage?

by Linda Lewis & Dave Parker – M/V Royal Sounder

We all know how to use cleats in the Puget Sound area. But what about when we cruise the Inside Passage to BC and beyond? What you’ll find is Bull Rails. No cleats. Just long pieces of timber on the dock called Bull Rails. The Bull Rails require you to get off the boat, thread the line under the rail, then over the rail to tie off or run back to the boat. OK most of the time. But it can be a real problem when the currents are running, the wind is blowing, or the helm is making mistakes – or all of the above.

There is help for those times. We call it “The Hook”. It is a device (a line with a hook) that can be thrown from the boat onto the dock, then drug back until it hooks the Bull Rail. Voila! You’re attached to the dock. It’s a life-saver in tough docking situations. We highly recommend having it onboard.

Throw it onto
the dock.
Pull it onto
the bull rail.
You're connected
to the bull rail.
